Mit "Serious Sam" läutete Croteam das Revival des Egoshooters alter Schule ein: Keine Gehirnakrobatik, keine komplizierten Missionen, sondern einfach Ballern und allenfalls mal einen Schalter betätigen. Das Konzept ging dank der leistungsfähigen Serious-Engine (Eigenentwicklung) voll auf, und das Spiel überzeugte durch eine knallbunte Grafik, riesige Außenlevels, ein großes Waffenarsenal und abgedrehte Gegner in allen Größen und Formen. Da konnten 3DRealms noch so sehr der Meinung sein, die Hauptfigur Sam sei ihrer Schöpfung Duke Nukem abgeguckt worden...
