"Far Cry 4" transferiert die bekannte Open-World-Spielmechanik in die fiktive Hochgebirgslandschaft 'Kyrat', die der Himalaya Region in Nepal nachempfunden ist. Technisch basiert der Titel auf einer stark modifizierten Dunia Engine 2, die bereits für "Far Cry 3" und "Blood Dragon" zum Einsatz kam.

Im Vorgänger waren die Kampagne und der kooperative Mehrspielermodus noch getrennt: Die Kampagne konnte nur allein gespielt werden, während im Mehrspielermodus gesonderte Coop-Missionen gespielt wurden.

In Teil 4 ist der kooperative Mehrspielermodus in den Einzelspielermodus integriert: Der Spieler kann über Internet einen zweiten Teilnehmer zeitweise in sein Spiel einladen, der ihm dann beim erobern der Außenposten und anderen feindlichen Stellungen hilft.
Vorausgesetzt er ist nicht in einer Mission unterwegs, da diese nicht kooperativ gespielt werden können. Zudem können sich die beiden Spieler nicht einfach frei durch die Welt bewegen, sondern nur in den für den Coop temporär abgesperrten Bereichen.

Der lokale Coop via Split-Screen, wie ihn der Vorgänger geboten hat, wurde hier ersatzlos gestrichen. Dadurch entfällt auch der gemischte Coop, indem bei Teil 3 parallel lokal und online gespielt werden konnte.
