In einem Interview am 24. September 2008 mit play.tm gab Louis-Pierre Pharand, Development Director von "Far Cry 2", die Entwicklung von "Far Cry 3" bekannt. Bereits auf der Games Convention 2008 sprach Patrick Redding, Narrative Designer bei Ubisoft Montréal, darüber das "Far Cry 3" technisch wieder auf der Dunia-Engine basiert.
Über Twitter hat Massive Entertainment bekanntgegeben, das sie für die Entwicklung des Mehrspieler-Parts verantwortlich sind.
Der kooperative Mehrspielermodus ist vom Hauptspiel abgekoppelt. Bis zu vier Teilnehmer (bzw. zwei Spieler im Split-Screen) kämpfen sich dabei gemeinsam durch eine spezielle Coop-Mini-Kampagne (sechs Missionen).
Der Split-Screen-Modus der beiden Konsolen-Versionen ist online-fähig und bietet die Möglichkeit, zusammen mit anderen Teilnehmern über Internet zusammen zu spielen (allerdings benötigen auf Xbox 360 beide Spieler einen Gold-Abonnement).
