"Age of Mythology" entführt Sie in ein Zeitalter, in dem furchtlose Helden mit schrecklichen Kreaturen kämpften und mächtige Götter sich in die Geschicke der Sterblichen einmischten. Führen Sie eine antike Zivilisation zu Ruhm und Ehre, indem Sie sowohl wirtschaftliche Aspekte meistern, als auch auf dem Schlachtfeld Siege erringen. Rufen Sie die Götter zu Hilfe und entsenden Sie mehr als 20 mythologische Kreaturen in den Kampf. Der neue Hit von Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires) erweckt die Welt der Griechen, Ägyper und Nordmänner zum Leben."
Das erste Spiel in der "Age of..."-Serie, das komplett in 3D daherkommt, entführt den Spieler in die Sagenwelt der Atlanter (Griechen), Ägypter und Wikinger. Die eigentliche Story entfaltet sich in 32 Missionen, daneben können auch Einzelgefechte gegen den Computer oder übers Internet geführt werden.
"AoM" ist weniger actionlastig als diverse Konkurrenzprodukte wie "Warcraft III", sondern setzt ebenso auf Verwaltungsaufgaben: 3 verschiedene Rohstoffe (Nahrung, Holz, Gold) müssen gesammelt plus die Gunst der Götter gewonnen werden, dazu gibt es etliche Technologien zu erforschen, die immer neue Boni, Einheiten und Gebäude ermöglichen. Jede Kultur kann zusätzlich noch diverse Zeitalter (archaisch, klassisch, heroisch, mythisch) durchschreiten, die mit der Anbetung einer auszuwählenden Gottheit einhergehen und wiederum neues Material freischalten.
Die Kämpfe funktionieren dabei nach dem Stein-Schere-Prinzip, neben normaler Infanterie und Kavallerie stehen mythische Einheiten (Minotauren, Zyklopen, Riesen etc.) und Kriegsmaschinerie (Belagerungstürme, Katapulte, Schiffe) zur Verfügung. Zentrale Figuren jeder Kultur sind "Helden", die einen Namen tragen, stärker als andere Einheiten sind und sich regenerieren können. Bis auf die Helden können die anderen Einheiten dabei teilweise mehrstufig aufgelevelt werden.
Die Missionen sind dabei sehr abwechslungsreich und beschränken sich selten auf simple Zerstörungsaufgaben.
