Echtzeitstrategie im historischen Gewand, die es erstmals möglich machte, durch verschiedene Epochen und Zeitalter zu schreiten, um aus den technologischen Fortschritten zu profitieren.

Galt 1997 als der beste bis dato entwickelte Titel des Genres und setzte vor allen Dingen für das noch nicht veröffentlichte "StarCraft" von Blizzard die Messlatte höher, dass sich im Nachhinein als der zwar technisch schlechtere, aber vor allen Dingen dank des Multiplayers als der langlebigere Titel erwiesen hat.

Seit jeher verbucht der Titel selbst bei der Drittvermarktung noch überdurchschnittlich hohe Verkaufszahlen.
