Vierter Teil der "Football Manager"-Reihe unter dem Publisher SEGA. Zuvor war die Reihe unter dem Namen "Championship Manager" bekannt, dessen Namensrechte beim früheren Publisher Eidos liegen, welche wiederum eigene Entwickler beauftragten und die ursprüngliche Reihe unter diesem Namen fortsetzten.

Im Spiel selbst sind 50 Länder mit den jeweiligen Ligen lizensiert. Die deutsche und japanische Nationalmannschaft besteht aus Phantasiespielern, ebenso ist der Name "Oliver Kahn" sowie die europäischen Wettbewerbe verfremdet, was sich jedoch am PC/Mac durch das Abändern einer Datei wieder rückgängig machen lässt.

Aufgrund von lizenzrechtlichen Gründen darf das Spiel nicht im deutschsprachigen Raum vertrieben werden. In Nordamerika erschien das Spiel unter dem Namen "Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008", in Südamerika unter dem Namen "Futbol Manager 2008".
