Der vierte Teil der "Doom"-Reihe wurde am 7. Mai 2008 auf der Website von id angekündigt. Das Projekt wurde nach diversen Schwierigkeiten im Verlauf des Jahres 2011 intern neu gestartet und weite Teile des bis dahin entwickelten Konzepts verworfen.
Im April 2013 tauchten dann erste Insider-Gerüchte auf, dass auch die Entwicklung von "Doom 4" im zweiten Anlauf in einer Sackgasse steckt und das Projekt existenziell bedroht. Im August 2013 wurde die Entwicklung von "Doom 4" schließlich komplett eingestellt. Die Mannschaft um id Software Creative Director Tim Willits sammelte sich neu und begann von vorn. Ein Prozess, an dessen Ende schließlich "Doom" stand, das im Mai 2016 veröffentlicht wurde.
