Der neunte "Tomb Raider"-Teil wurde Mitte Juli 2009 durch ein bei Crystal Dynamics geleaktes Datenblatt ungewollt enthüllt. Kurz darauf tauchten im Internet bereits die ersten Konzeptzeichnungen auf.
Anfang Dezember 2010 wurde die Entwicklung dann offiziell enthüllt und bekannt gegeben, dass das Spiel nur den Titel "Tomb Raider" tragen soll.
Teil 9 wartet mit einem düsteren Szenario auf. Inhaltlich eine Art Prequel, erzählt das Spiel in dessen Verlauf die Vorgeschichte der jungen Lara Croft und wie sie letztlich zur Archäologin wurde.
Ein teambasierter Mehrspielermodus ist ebenfalls mit dabei. Er wurde von Eidos Montréal entworfen.
