Portierung	Steam Games for Windows LIVE wurde beim Release der "neuen" Steam-Version komplett entfernt. Zusätzlich können die normalen Retail-Erstauflagen sowie die Complete Edition bei Steam aktiviert werden. Egal welche Version bei Steam mit dem GfWL-Key aktiviert wird, man wird automatisch auf die Complete Edition hochgestuft.

"DiRT 3" wurde Mitte März 2010 von Codemasters Vizepräsident Gavin Cheshire in der Zeitschrift Edge enthüllt.

Mitte Februar 2011 erklärte Codemasters, dass man den Namen Colin McRae nicht mehr im Spieltitel verwendet wird. Sein Einfluss soll aber im Spiel auch weiterhin deutlich spürbar sein.

Mit Teil 3 gibt es den von Fans gewünschten Split-Screen-Modus. Zwei Spieler können im horizontal geteilten Bild inkl. sechs KI-Gegner Rennen ausfahren. Bis zu acht Teilnehmer können über Internet und System-Link/LAN spielen.
