"Der Krieg im Norden" wurde Mitte März 2010 von Warner Interactive und den Snowblind Studios angekündigt. Die Snowblind Studios machten bereits mit "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance" und den beiden "Champions of Norrath"-Teilen im Hack 'n Slay-Genre von sich reden.
Obwohl das Spiel dank Warner offiziell mit der "Herr der Ringe"-Lizenz ausgestattet ist, bedient sich der Titel dennoch nur der Welt "Mittelerde" zu seiner Inszenierung: "Der Krieg im Norden" ist lediglich ein paralleler Handlungsstrang, der zeitgleich zu "Die Gefährten" verläuft.
Ansonsten hat das Spiel keine Berührungspunkte mit der dreiteiligen Hauptgeschichte. Inhalt, Charaktere und Handlungsverlauf haben nichts mit den Werken von J. R. R. Tolkien oder den Verfilmungen von Peter Jackson zu tun. Während die bisherigen "Herr der Ringe"-Spiele eher sachte Kampfszenen boten, setzt der Entwickler hier auf eine düstere und blutige Inszenierung.
