Mit "Dying Light" baut Techland die Spielmechanik seiner "Dead Island"-Spiele weiter aus. Dabei transferiert man den Handlungsrahmen von einer tropischen Insel in eine urbane Umgebung.

Neu sind dabei die Kletter- und Geschicklichkeitseinlagen, bei denen der Spieler wie ein Parkourläufer vor den Untoten flüchtet. Dazu kommt ein dynamischer Tag- und Nachtwechsel. Nachts ist die Spielwelt erheblich gefährlicher, dafür werden Aktionen und Kämpfe aber im Gegenzug auch mit mehr Erfahrungspunkten belohnt.

Im kooperativen Mehrspielermodus (nur über Internet) kämpfen bis zu vier Teilnehmer gemeinsam gegen die Zombie-Apokalypse.
