Obwohl schon lange vorher Gerüchte von "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" durch die Presse liefen, erfolgte die Ankündigung des Spiels offiziell erst auf der E3 2016. Produzent Eiji Aonuma erwähnte bereits in der Nintendo Direct-Ausgabe am 23 Januar 2013, dass sich ein neues "Zelda"-Spiel in der Entwicklung befindet. Wie zuvor von Spielern und Fachpresse ohnehin erwartet, erscheint das Spiel parallel für beide Maschinen: Wii U und Nintendo Switch. Für Erstere ist es der endgültige Abschluss, für Zweitere ein Launchtitel zum Start der neuen Hardware.
Auch die wesentlichste Neuerung von "Breath of the Wild" hatte die Gerüchteküche vorab bereits enthüllt: Die Spielwelt basiert auf dem Open-World-Konzept und bietet damit erstmalig in der Reihe eine weitgehend uneingeschränkte Bewegungsfreiheit.
