Der wohl meistverwendete Ausdruck im Zusammenhang mit Final Fantasy IX dürfte "Zurück zu den Wurzeln" sein: SquareSoft proklamierte nach den ersten beiden Titeln, welche beide eher einen westlichen Touch und eine "moderne" Story bekommen hatten, eine Rückbesinnung auf den Ursprung der Serie: Konservativer Fantasystoff, ein klassisches System zum Aufbau der eigenen Charaktere und den offensichtlich vermissten ostasiatischen Flair. Die Umsetzung an sich klappte ganz gut, auch FFIX ist ein spielenswertes Stück Software - allerdings kann man es keinem übel nehmen, wenn er von einem gewissen "Rückschritt" im negativen Sinne spricht: Die "Meilensteinqualitäten" der beiden Vorgänger hat dieses Spiel leider nicht.
