Lineage, von der Firma NCSoft, war das erste und gleichzeitig erfolgreichste Onlinerollenspiel in Südkorea.
Der bahnbrechende kommerzielle Erfolg und eine der größten Anzahl an zahlenden Abonnenten brachte die Firma schnell auf einen internationalen Erfolgskurs. Der Titel fand in Korea kurz nach Veröffentlichung auf Anhieb über 2 Millionen Kunden und lief damit rasend schnell jeder anderen Onlinesoftware den Rang ab.
Lineage setzt dabei auf eine klassische 2D Top-Down Spielmechanik gepaart mit einer eher comiclastigen Grafik.
Gleichzeitig orientiert sich der Titel sehr nahe an Diablo. Er verfügt über ein vergleichbares Point & Click Gameplay und ein ähnliches Interface.
Das Erfolgsrezept des Titels wurde schnell kopiert, Ragnarok Online stellt einen der im Westen wohl bekanntesten Vertreter dar.
Lineage selbst hat sein koreanisches Heimatland nie verlassen und ist nicht in andere Sprachen lokalisiert worden. Erst sein Nachfolger erfuhr einen weltweiten Release.
