Neben "Doom" der bekannteste Shooter von id Software und ein echter Klassiker.
"Quake" sollte eigentlich ein Fantasy-Actionspiel werden mit Schwertern als Waffen und Rittern und Drachen als Gegnern. Wenige Monate vor Erscheinen wurde das Konzept jedoch umgekrempelt, Schusswaffen eingebaut und die Rollenspielelemente entfernt. Die Ritter-Gegner blieben jedoch unter anderen, der Drache tauchte im Missionpack "Dissolution of Eternity" wieder auf.
Der Multiplayer-Modus ermöglichte die Teilnahme von bis zu 32 Spielern, was damals ein Rekord war.
