Side Arms ist ein überwiegend horizontal scrollender "Jetpack Shooter", es gibt jedoch auch einige vertikal scrollende Spielabschnitte.
Das Spiel reiht sich nahtlos in Capcom's "Jetpack Hero Shooter" Serie ein, die 1985 mit Section Z begann. Mit Side Arms als zweiten Teil wurde die bekannte Spielmechanik ausgebaut und erweitert sowie die Optik weiter ausgefeilt.
Bis zu zwei Spieler ballern sich gemeinsam durch 12 Level. Dabei finden sich diverse Waffen und Power-Ups, die alle gleichzeitig getragen werden können. Sie müssen lediglich der jeweiligen Spielsituation entsprechend eingesetzt werden.
Mit Lost Worlds (bzw. Forgotten Worlds) beendete Capcom 1988 seine Bemühungen im dieses Genre.
