"God of War: Chains of Olympus" wurde auf der Rückseite des "God of War II"-Handbuchs erstmals enthüllt.
Es handelt sich dabei um eine komplette Neuentwicklung, Inhalte der beiden PlayStation 2-Originale werden nicht verwendet. Darüber hinaus hat der Titel eine eigene Hintergrundgeschichte und baut inhaltlich auf die beiden Vorgänger auf. "Chains of Olympus" ist der erste PSP-Titel, der die vollen 333 MHz CPU-Leistung des Handhelds ausreizt.
Es kursierten Gerüchte, dass eine PS2-Portierung geplant sei, diese wurden jedoch mittlerweile von Sony dementiert. 2011 erschien dann für die PS3 eine Portierung mit Full-HD- und 3D-Unterstützung.
