Der vierte Teil der "Gears of War"-Serie wurde Ende Januar 2014 von Microsofts oCorporate Vice President Phil Spencer auf Twitter enthüllt. Die Entwicklung leitete das hauseigene Studio The Coalition, nachdem Microsoft die Rechte an der "Gears of War"-Franchise von Epic Games erworben hatte. Technisch setzt man auf die neue Generation der Unreal Engine 4. Teil 4 baut die Spielmechanik der Serie weiter aus und modifiziert insbesondere das Deckungssystem.
Epic Games selbst hat nichts mehr mit der Reihe zu tun und widmet sich anderen Projekten bzw. hauptsächlich der Weiterentwicklung seiner Unreal Engine. Allerdings ist Rod Fergusson, der ehemalige Director of Production der "Gears of War"-Reihe bei Epic Games, mit dem Kauf der Franchise ebenfalls zu The Coalition gewechselt.
Hier schlüpft der Spieler in die Rolle von JD Fenix, dem Sohn von Marcus Fenix (der Protagonist der ersten drei Teile). An seiner Seite kämpfen Kait Diaz, eine junge Frau aus dem Kreis der 'Outsiders' sowie Delmont "Del" Walker, ein ehemaliger Soldat aus den Reihen der COG-Milizen.
Die Handlung von Teil 4 setzt 25 Jahre nach den Geschehnissen des Vorgängers ein: Die Welt hat sich zwar von der Locust-Invasion und ihren Kriegsfolgen halbwegs erholt, ist aber weitgehend entvölkert. Nur noch ein paar hunderttausend Menschen leben auf dem Planeten Sera. Doch plötzlich geschehen merkwürdige Dinge: Bewohner werden wahllos entführt und verschwinden spurlos oder brutal ermordet. Und so stellt sich letztlich heraus, dass neue blutrünstige Kreaturen auf Sera ihr Unwesen treiben. Der neue Feind, "The Swarm" genannt, wird schon bald zur veritablen Bedrohung für die 'Restzivilisation' des Planeten und zwingt die verbleibenden Menschen zur militanten Gegenwehr.
Wie bei den Vorgängern der Reihe teilt sich auch "Gears of War 4" in die Bereiche Kampagne und Mehrspielermodus. Die Kampagne kann im kooperativen Zweispielermodus gemeinsam bewältigt werden. Wahlweise über Internet oder lokal im Split-Screen. Ob der beliebte kooperative Horde-Modus aus den Vorgängern wieder mit dabei sein wird, ist noch unklar.
Der kompetitive Mehrspielermodus entsteht extern bei Splash Damage und bietet verschiedene Modi, in denen sich die Teilnehmer auf Seiten der COG-Soldaten bzw. der Swarm-Kreaturen gegenseitig behaken.
