"Gears of War 3" wurde Anfang April 2010 von Microsoft enthüllt. Das Spiel erschien weltweit am 20. September 2011. Es war der erste Teil der Reihe, welcher in Deutschland offiziell und unzensiert mit USK-Freigabe ab 18 Jahren veröffentlicht wurde.

"Gears of War 3" schließt die Handlung der beiden Vorgänger ab und ist somit das Ende der 'Marcus Fenix Trilogie'. Mit Teil 4 traten neue Protagonisten in die Serie ein.

Der Titel bietet umfangreiche Mehrspielermodi über Xbox Live, kooperativ und kompetitiv. Im lokalen Mehrspielermodus via Split-Screen sind die Kampagne (Coop), Horde 2.0 und diverse Mehrspielermodi gegen KI/Bots spielbar.
