"Serious Sam 3: Before First Encounter" ist gleichermaßen eine Hommage an sich selbst, wie auch eine Reminiszenz an die geradlinigen Shooter alter Tage. Shooter, in denen mehr Feinde nieder gemäht, als Schalter gedrückt (oder Zwischensequenzen weggedrückt) wurden und die Sprungtaste nur eine Funktion hatte: Schneller über die toten Leichen der Widersacher hinweg zu steigen.
Auch "Before First Encounter" bietet den obligatorischen kooperativen Mehrspielermodus der Reihe. Für zwei Teilnehmer im Split-Screen oder für bis zu vier Spieler über Internet. Die PC-Version bietet sogar Split-Screen für vier Teilnehmer in allen Spielmodi.
