Donkey Kong Land erschien knapp ein Jahr nach seinem Vorbild, Donkey Kong Country (SNES). Donkey Kong Land reizte die 8 Bit des ursprünglichen GameBoy bis ins Letzte aus, trotzdem hätte es nicht ansatzweise für eine Portierung des Originals gereicht. Das Resultat ist ein komplett neues, an den technischen Rahmen des GameBoy angepasstes Spiel, das außer Story und Spielprinzip nichts mit seinem 'großen Bruder' gemein hat.
