"Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" wurde auf der E3 2013 angekündigt. Wie bereits der Quasi-Vorgänger "Donkey Kong Country Returns" ist auch dieser Titel ein klassisches 2D-Jump'n'Run mit 3D-Effekten. In speziellen Spielszenen wechselt das Gameplay fließend von 2D zu 3D. Neben Donkey Kong und Diddy Kong sind auch Dixie und Cranky Kong wieder mit dabei.
Auch ein kooperativer Mehrspielermodus ist vorhanden. Wie beim Vorgänger spielen zwei Teilnehmer simultan ihre Charaktere auf einem Bildschirm, um die Levelabschnitte gemeinsam zu bewältigen.
