Das 1995er "Double Dragon" basiert auf dem gleichnamigen amerikanischen Spielfilm von James Yukich, der 1994 entstanden ist. Der Film selbst basiert nur lose auf der 'Double Dragon'-Franchise und bekam hier zusätzlich eine Lizenz-Umsetzung verpasst.
Im Gegensatz zu den vorherigen Teilen der Reihe handelt es sich hierbei nicht um ein Side-Scrolling Beat'em-Up, sondern um einen VS.-Fighter im Stil des seinerzeit extrem populären "Street Fighter II".
Ein ähnliches Konzept verfolgte bereits das im Jahr zuvor erschienene "Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls", das jedoch auf der US Zeichentrickserie basiert.
