ACHTUNG:
Registrierung und Freischaltung über STEAM erforderlich (Einzel- und Mehrspielermodus).
Der Multiplayer-Modus entspricht dem der Konsolen-Versionen.
Der Mehrspielermodus wird in Verbindung mit STEAM und dem Matchmaking Service „IW.Net“ (Infinity Ward.Net) abgewickelt. Dementsprechend gibt es:
- keine Dedicated Server
- keine LAN-Funktion
- keine In-Game-Console
- keine Modding-Möglichkeiten
- Mehrspieler-Sitzungen mit nur 18 Teilnehmern (zwei Teams jeweils 9 gegen 9)
- keine Aufzeichnungs-/Replay-Funktion für MP-Matches
IW.Net legt darüber hinaus fest, wer das Spiel hosten muss. Damit ist eine Liga-Fähigkeit des Spiels im E-Sport praktisch ausgeschlossen.
Außerdem können Besitzer der deutschen Version nicht mit jenen der internationalen Ausgabe im „Spec Ops“-Modus antreten. Der normale Multiplayer-Modus ist hingegen mit allen Verkaufsversionen kompatibel. Diese Einschränkung gilt ausschließlich für die PC-Version.
WICHTIG FÜR DEUTSCHE SPIELER!
Seit der Indizierung der Originalversion ist es nicht mehr erlaubt, selbige mit einer deutschen IP-Adresse bei Steam zu aktivieren - eine Fehlermeldung wird dann von Steam zurückgegeben. Wer die PC-Version also importiert, kann sie nicht nutzen - es sei denn, er hat Bekanntschaften in anderen Ländern oder kennt andere Wege, die IP-Sperre zu umgehen. Alternativ bietet Activision Blizzard an, die internationale Version ohne zusätzliche Kosten gegen die deutsche zu tauschen. |

Zunächst offiziell als „Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2“ angekündigt, wurde der Name auf „Modern Warfare 2“ zusammengestrichen. Laut Activision wollte man ursprünglich eine Franchise-Auskopplung kreieren, die als direkter Nachfolger zu „Modern Warfare“ vermarktet werden sollte, ohne den eigentlichen Bezug zu „Call of Duty„ beizubehalten.
Am 10.07.09 wurde dann bekannt gegeben, dass der Titel offiziell nun doch wieder „Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2“ lautet und dementsprechend vermarktet wird. Eine Umfrage unter Spielern auf dem US-Markt hatte ergeben, dass große Teile der Kunden nichts mit „Modern Warfare 2“ anfangen konnten. Um die Verkaufsziele nicht zu gefährden, fügte man „Call of Duty„ als bekannte Franchise wieder an.
Die Haupt-Story kann diesmal nicht im Coop gespielt werden, es gibt jedoch verschiedene Missionen - sogenannte „Spec Ops“ - die kooperativ online oder lokal via Splitscreen (auf den Konsolen) gespielt werden können.
