Die PC-Version wickelt ihre Multiplayer-Modi wieder über dedizierte Server ab, die jedoch nur bei einem vom Hersteller zwangsweise vorgegebenem Anbieter aufgesetzt werden können. Das in „Modern Warfare 2“ verwendete und viel kritisierte IW.Net findet in diesem Teil keine Verwendung. Auch Mod-Tools werden, im Gegensatz zu Modern Warfare 2“, wieder unterstützt.

• In Mission Nr. 15, „Redemption“, beginnt man direkt auf dem Deck des Frachters. Der Luftangriff mit dem Helikopter wird komplett übersprungen und ist daher auch nicht spielbar. |

Der siebte Teil der Reihe, „Call of Duty: Black Ops“, wurde am 30. April 2010 angekündigt. Er ist im Jahre 1968 angesiedelt und behandelt diverse Schauplätze des Kalten Krieges.
Das Spiel basiert technisch nicht auf der IW 4.0 Engine (aus „Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2“), sondern auf einer modifizierten Version der von Treyarch angepassten eNCHANGED IW Engine 3.0, die in „Call of Duty: World at War“ zum Einsatz kam.
Der Mehrspieler-Modus bietet großteils bekannte Kost, allerdings müssen Waffen und Perks nun für eine In-game-Währung erstanden werden, ihr Erhalt erfolgt also nicht mehr automatisch beim Aufleveln. Weiters können Waffen beliebig modifiziert werden (z.B. durch Infrared Sights oder durch ein größeres Magazin). Einen regulären Coop-Modus (wie „Spec Ops“ beim Vorgänger oder die Kampagne bei „World at War“) gibt es nicht, jedoch kann der Zombie-Modus in Teams von bis zu vier Teilnehmern bestritten werden.
