Der neuste Teil der „Medal of Honor“-Reihe spielt, im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern, nicht während des 2. Weltkrieges. Stattdessen spielt man einen Tier 1-Agenten im Afghanistan des Jahres 2002. Damit schlägt die Serie einen ähnlichen Weg ein, wie es bereits „Call of Duty“ mit Teil 4 der Reihe tat und verlegt die Handlung in die Moderne.
Das neue „Medal of Honor“ wird zwei verschiedene Grafik-Engines verwenden: während für den Singleplayer-Modus eine stark modifizierte Unreal Engine 3 zum Einsatz kommt, wird im Multiplayer-Modus auf DICEs hauseigene Frostbite Engine („Battlefield: Bad Company“) zurückgegriffen. Durch diese ungewöhnliche Entscheidung könnten sich beide Modi optisch stark voneinander unterscheiden.
Laut EAs Creative Director Richard Farrelly ist die PlayStation 3 dieses Mal die Leadplattform.
Die deutsche Fassung kam, trotz USK 18-Freigabe, nur stark zensiert in den Handel; Österreich und die Schweiz erhielten allerdings die (deutschsprachige) Originalversion.
