"Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic" war ursprünglich als Erweiterung zu "Age of Wonders II" geplant. Es basiert daher aus offensichtlichen Gründen technisch und inhaltlich auf der Vorlage von Teil 2.
"Shadow Magic" führt für jede der drei spielbaren Fraktionen ein weiteres Volk ein:
- Syron (Gut)
- Nomaden (Neutral)
- Schattendämonen (Böse)
Bietet zwei Mehrspielermodi
- Klassisch: Jeder Spieler ist der Reihe nach am Zug.
- Simultan: Alle Spieler machen gleichzeitig ihre Spielzüge in der Aufbau- und Bewegungsphase, danach werden eventuell entstandene Auseinandersetzen in der Kampfphase ausgespielt.
Unterstützt bis zu acht Teilnehmer per Hotseat, LAN, Internet (über GameSpy) und PBEM (Play-by-Email).
