Das Spiel wurde offiziell vom Regisseur des ersten „Friday the 13th“- Films, Sean S. Cunningham, angekündigt.
Es sollte laut Cunningham im Oktober 2015 zeitgleich mit einer neuen, auf dem Franchise basierenden TV-Serie erscheinen. Es war geplant, dass das Spiel Elemente der Serie sowie der Filme miteinander verbinden.
Die geplante Serie sowie ein neuer Film wurden jedoch letztendlich nicht realisiert.
Das Spiel erschien nach einigen Verzögerungen im Frühjahr 2017 für PS4, PC und Xbox One.
Aufgrund eines Rechtsstreit zwischen Victor Miller, dem Drehbuchautoren des ersten Films der Reihe, sowie den derzeitigen Inhabern der Filmrechte, wurden alle weiteren Entwicklungen am Spiel (z.B. Elemente aus dem Film „Jason X“) im Juni 2018 eingestellt.
