"The King of Fighters XV" wurde am 05.12.2018 während einer Pressekonferenz von SNK offiziell angekündigt.
Nachdem sich die selbst entwickelte 3D-Grafikengine von "The King of Fighters XIV" erhebliche Kritik von Spielern und Fachpresse gefallen lassen musste, setzte man bei Teil 15 auf die Unreal Engine 4. Ein technisch vergleichsweise großer Schritt, den SNK bereits mit der 2019-er Neuauflage von "Samurai Shodown" sehr erfolgreich gewagt hatte.
