"Star Ocean: First Departure" ist ein Remake, welches auf dem Erstling der Serie (SNES, 1996) basiert.
Im Gegensatz zum Original sind die Dialoge im Remake zum Teil vertont. Ansonsten wartet der Titel mit dem üblichen Feintuning an Spielmechanik und dessen Echtzeit-Kampfsystem auf.
Die PSP-Version ist die erste offizielle, internationale Veröffentlichung des Spiels, da das SNES-Original seinerzeit nicht lokalisiert worden ist.
