„Valkyria Chronicles III“ wurde im September 2010 durch eine Teaser-Website enthüllt und in der September-Ausgabe der japanischen Famitsu kurz darauf offiziell angekündigt. Im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern entstand „Valkyria Chronicles III“ nicht direkt bei SEGA, sondern wurde von Media.Vision (u.a. „Wild Arms“) entwickelt.
SEGA erklärte Mitte 2011, dass „Valkyria Chronicles III“ nicht im Westen erscheinen, sondern Japan-exklusiv bleiben wird. Als Begründung wurden von SEGAs Hiroshi Seno die enttäuschenden Verkaufszahlen der Serie in Nordamerika und Europa genannt, welche die Kosten für eine weitere Lokalisierung nicht rechtfertigen würden. Seit Ende 2013 existiert jedoch eine englische Fan-Übersetzung für die „Extra Edition“ des Spiels.
