"Valkyria: Azure Revolution" wurde 2015 in der November-Ausgabe des japanischen "Famitsu"-Magazins angekündigt. Das Spiel baut inhaltlich auf das "Valkyria Chronicles"-Universum auf. Die Spielmechanik entspricht jedoch nicht den Vorgängern der Reihe. "Azure Revolution" basiert auf einem "Legion Battle System" getauften Kampfsystem, das ebenfalls klassische Rundenstrategie mit Echtzeit-Elementen mischt. Allerdings mit deutlichem Fokus auf Echtzeit-Kampf. Die Rundenmechanik ist nahezu unsichtbar in den Hintergrund gedrängt worden. Die Aktionspunkte gibt es überhaupt nicht mehr.
SEGA veröffentlichte über PSN eine (nur in Japan erschienene) Preview-/Alpha-Version mit dem Zweck, Erfahrungen und Meinungen der japanischen Spieler zum Kampfsystem zu sammeln. Käufer von 'Valkyria Chronicles Remaster' erhielten exklusiven Zugriff auf die Demoversion.
