"Valkyria Chronicles 4" wurde Mitte November 2017 mit einem Teaser-Bild enthüllt und weniger Tage später von SEGA offiziell angekündigt.
Die Spielmechanik setzt auf die klassische Formel der ersten drei Serienableger aus Taktik-JRPG und Rundenstrategie, gepaart mit 3rd-Person Shooter-Elementen in Echtzeit. Ein Konglomerat, was SEGA selbst als 'BLiTZ-Kampfsystem' bezeichnet und westliche Spieler so ähnlich aus dem PC-Titel "UFO" bzw. "X-COM" her kennen. Technisch setzten die Entwickler auf eine frisierte Version der selbst entworfenen CANVAS Engine, die der Spielgrafik eine Art Mischung aus Tuschezeichnung und Wasserfarbengemälde verleiht. Sie kam bereits im Original (PS3, 2008) zum Einsatz.
Das Geschehen verläuft ab 1935 parallel zum ersten "Valkyria Chronicles", spinnt jedoch eine eigene Geschichte weiter, ohne Bezug zu den drei Vorgängern.
