"XCOM: Enemy Within" wurde zunächst als "Big Project" mit einem Teaser angekündigt. Anfang August 2013 erfolgte die Enthüllung unter seinem richtigen Namen. Die offizielle Vorstellung des Spiels erfolgte im Rahmen der Unterhaltungsmesse gamescom in Köln.
Es handelt sich dabei um eine Erweiterung für "XCOM: Enemy Unknown", die neue Funktionen und Inhalte sowohl für die Kampagne als auch den Mehrspielermodus bereit hält.
