"Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain" ist, nach dem 2011er "Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon", die zweite Auskoppelung aus der "Earth Defense Force"-Serie. Dieser Teil wurde statt durch Sandlot von Yuke's entwickelt und basiert technisch auf der Unreal Engine 4.
Angesiedelt im Jahr 2040 wird die Erde erneut Ziel eines flächendeckenden Angriffs durch die Ravager aus dem Weltall. Vier spielbare Soldatenklassen stehen dem Spieler zur Auswahl, um den Kampf gegen die extraterrestrischen Aggressoren aufzunehmen: Der universell ausgerüstete Standard-Fußsoldat "Trooper" (Ranger), die agile Jet-Pack-Flugeinheit "Jet-Lifter" (Wing Diver) sowie der schwer gepanzerte "Heavy Striker" (Fencer). Neu ist der "Prowl Rider", eine Mischung aus Nahkämpfer, Jet-Lifter und Assassine. Mit ihm lassen sich feindliche Einheiten übernehmen und per Gedankenkontrolle steuern, zum Beispiel als Reittier, um die Aliens und ihre Technologie gegen sie selbst einzusetzen.
