Die Entwicklung von "Heroes of Might and Magic IV" stand seinerzeit unter enormem finanziellen Druck, weshalb 3DO es sich nicht mehr leisten konnte, die Arbeiten an dem Spiel bis zur Veröffentlichung vollständig abzuschließen.
Dementsprechend unfertig und fehlerhaft wurde das Spiel auf den Markt geworfen. Zahlreiche Funktionen, Bugfixes und sogar der Mehrspielermodus wurden erst nach dem Release per Patch nachgereicht, als die Verkaufserlöse den Entwicklern wieder das nötige Geld in die Kassen gespült hatte.
Daher gelten die hier gemachten Angaben unter Vorbehalt! Eine Erstausgabe ohne Patches hat gar keinen Mehrspielermodus und es fehlen zahlreiche Inhalte. Dank dem umfassenden Support wurden alle wesentlichen Probleme ausgeräumt. Alle Zweit- und Budget-Auflagen enthalten bereits die Patches samt Mehrspielermodus.
