"Tales of Eternia" ist das dritte Spiel der "Tales"-Serie von Namco.
Für die Veröffentlichung in Nordamerika wurde das Spiel bewusst in "Tales of Destiny II" unbenannt, um eine Markenschutzverletzung des Spielzeugherstellers Mattel zu vermeiden: Dieser hatte sich nämlich den Begriff "Eternia" für seine Action-Figuren rund um "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" schützen lassen. Um einer eventuell folgenden gerichtlichen Auseinandersetzung aus dem Weg zu gehen, änderte man kurzerhand den Namen des Spiels.
Obwohl das Spiel tatsächlich den auf "Tales of Destiny" folgenden Teil der "Tales"-Serie darstellt, handelt es sich um einen inhaltlich eigenständigen Titel, der nur wenige Parallelen zum Vorgänger aufweist. Stattdessen erschien im Jahr 2002 mit "Tales of Destiny 2" für die PlayStation 2 der eigentliche Nachfolger, der auch inhaltlich an den Erstling anknüpft. Obwohl dieser ausschließlich in Japan erhältlich ist, werden die beiden Spiele aufgrund der identischen Titel dennoch desöfteren verwechselt.
Im Jahr 2007 ist das Spiel weltweit (und somit erstmals in Europa) wieder unter dem ursprünglichen Titel "Tales of Eternia" für die PlayStation Portable veröffentlicht worden.
"Tales of Eternia" bietet einen lokalen kooperativen Mehrspielermodus für bis zu vier Teilnehmer (optional mit Multitap). Während Spieler 1 den Hauptcharakter über den gesamten Spielverlaufs steuert, also auf der Weltkarte, in Städten/Geschäften und Dungeons usw., können die restlichen Gruppenmitglieder in den Echtzeitkämpfen von menschlichen Mitspielern gesteuert werden.
