"Tales of Xillia" bietet einen lokalen kooperativen Mehrspielermodus für bis zu vier Teilnehmer. Während Spieler 1 den Hauptcharakter über den gesamten Spielverlaufs steuert, also auf der Weltkarte, in Städten/Geschäften und Dungeons usw., können die restlichen Gruppenmitglieder in den Echtzeitkämpfen von menschlichen Mitspielern gesteuert werden.
Eine weitere Neuerung ist, dass erstmals die komplette Spielmechanik aus der 3rd-Person-Perspektive statt der Draufsicht gesteuert wird. Einzige Ausnahme sind die Echtzeit-Kämpfe, die weiterhin aus der für die Serie typischen Seitenansicht ablaufen.
